Art for wreckords

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

A while back, the owner of an independent label by the name of Tic Tac Totally got in touch with me (through bougieman, natch) to do some artwork for him, which you can see below. This will be inserted in the sleeves of all his label's forthcoming releases; the blank spaces around the border will have the album covers Photoshopped into them. He provided the idea and the dialogue (it's this idea that I unwittingly "appropriated" in my "Cauldron Cunt" drawing of a few posts back), and I did the drawing. The thing is, we never established a price for this work and now he's asking me for one. I never have any idea what to charge, and I don't really feel right asking for much because (aside from the obvious fact that independent record label owners aren't exactly swimming in money) I really took my sweet time doing this, not getting started until almost two months after he first wrote to me and then putting it aside as I pursued other things; plus there's the fact that I did enjoy doing this job and he was always super cool and a really nice guy in my dealings with him. So, what the fuck should I charge?

I'm off to Detroit tomorrow, so I won't be at SPX this year, but if you're going, make sure you stop by the HOUSE OF TWELVE table and pick up the latest issue of their comic, which you can see a preview of here. I've got a two-page story in there, along with a whole list of luminaries.

See pee? Ah!

I've been playing around with sepia ink, looking for a "softer" approach to inking that might be more suitable for some subjects. Any feedback would be appreciated.

How's that for a boring title? Anyway, this is a drawing I just finished. It's a reworking of an earlier piece I wasn't happy with, which you can see here

I'm not at all as tall as I drew myself here, and I've never done coke. Other than that, this is entirely accurate.

Ugh, I hate being sick! I hope to turn the corner on this fucking illness soon and get back to drawing. So, in lieu of new work, I thought I'd share a few things from loooooooong ago, back when I was a struggling young artist filled with delusions of grandeur, as opposed to the failed old recluse filled with bitter regrets that I've become.
This drawing appeared in an issue of MALEFACT that was subsequently reviewed favorably in SCREW magazine. SCREW reprinted the drawing along with the review, which was a nice little stroke of encouragement for my nascent artistic ego.

Back then I'd use wash quite a bit. And copy from photographs, as well.

old dad n son drawing

This one is just embarrassing. What's worse, I sent it to Jim Goad of ANSWER ME! in the hopes that he'd invite me to contribute illustrations. He wrote back a brief yet encouraging letter, and while he didn't roll out the red carpet, he was quite nice, which was surprising given his reputation.

old street scene drawing

This is the oldest of the bunch. It's an illustration for the band of an old pen pal (yes, with actual stamps and envelopes!)with whom I've long since lost touch.

“Then be destroyed!”

Been laid up with a cold for the past three days, so I've got no drawings or sketches to share. In my journeys through YouTube, however, I did come across this classic Spiderman cartoon that I remember vividly from my childhood. I only saw it once, when I was about nine years old, but it made a deep impression on me. I was happy to discover that it's even trippier than I remember. Of course, the music also kicks ass.
