Pity the humble cassette tape

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

it's been thrown on the scrap heap of pop culture history, without even the retro kitsch enjoyed by 8-tracks to recommend it. Of course, its hard to argue in its favor, what with its notoriously crappy sound quality and its miniscule album-artwork-nullifying dimensions. They were good for carrying around in your pocket, though, weren't they? A veritable boon for shoplifters.

I had a whole shitload of cassette tapes, but, seized by a frenzy of cleaning this past weekend, I decided to finally get rid of them. I did save a select few, however, and I'm making them available to you for FREE! That's right, all you have to do is ask and they're yours. I do ask that you offer something to trade to cover the cost of postage, however. So, let me know if you're interested in the commments section and we'll work something out.

but for some reason I felt compelled to draw this a couple of years ago.

And here's a sketch of a cute little Hot Topic shopper, to get that taste out of your mouth...

(EDIT: Taking an actual good look at this sketch now that it's up on my page, I gotta ask, what the fuck is up with her left arm? It's half the width of her other one! Poor thing's atrophied. I know it's just a sketch, but c'mon!)
I never do cute. And I haven't done much of anything this week, because my insomnia has been kicking my ass. It's hard to be productive when you haven't had a halfway decent night's sleep in nearly two weeks. Nothing seems to work. Perhaps I'll just step in front of a speeding bus.

Trench coats and stained blue dresses were all the rage

The year was 1999, and a young neurotic by the name of Virgil was born into an uncaring world. And, ten years later, the world still doesn't care!
Yeah, so, this one's from ten years ago, back when I was signing my work with my real name. Virgil started out looking rather different than the way he does now. I had to change him after friends of mine kept asking me if I had modeled him on another person we knew. If I did, it wasn't intentional, and I felt bad about it afterward and hid the comic from the person in question. So, I subsequently changed Virgil's look.

Finally dragged my ass back to life drawing last night after a few weeks of not going.

Pretty academic, I know, but at this point in my life I'm happy if I can just get the whole figure down with some semblance of proportion.
You know what else makes me happy? Finding cool stuff at thrift stores, like this Alf statuette I picked up the other day

As I posted here a little while back, I'm in the process of putting together a website. I'd like to have a landing page for it, with click-able entry points for the 5 categories that'll be featured. So, I drew up a sketch (the text is not as it'll appear in the final version)

The only thing is, it looks a lot like this other drawing I did years ago. The older drawing won't appear on the website, but it is one of my better known drawings (to the extent that any of my stuff is known); that is, there's actually a few people outside of the ridiculously small world of independent comics who've seen it. Part of me feels like I should come up with a new design (even though nobody who's aware of the older drawing will see this new one), but a bigger part of me recognizes the fact that I'm already swamped with work I need to get done and if I don't just ink this fucking thing and get it out to the web designer, then the website will never go up. So what am I asking here? I dunno, but input is always appreciated.
