From the reject pile…or maybe not…I can’t decide

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

Some images from a 4-page comic I did earlier this year. I was happy with it to the extent that it allowed me to incorporate a bunch of ideas I'd had lying around for a while, but in general I'm not crazy about the way it turned out and don't know if I'll ever let it see the light of day in its complete form.
It's somewhat autobiographical. I don't really look like that, but it's not that far off. This is the first panel of the story, which repeats some of the elements of that bathroom drawing I posted earlier.

Sketches from the past week

Monday, October 27th, 2008

This first one was inspired by the story "Breakfast at Kennedy's" in Jon Stewart's high-larious book NAKED PICTURES OF FAMOUS PEOPLE (which I picked up for only 50 cents!). At one point during his stay at the Kennedy Compound on Cape Cod, the narrator gets locked in the cellar where all the deformed Kennedy offspring are hidden, among whom are three "dwarflike lobster people."

I drew this upstairs at New Valentino's on 5th Ave(it's pretty much just a big Korean deli with an upstairs dining area; why I hang out there when I have the whole city to choose from, I don't know); there's always the nastiest-looking old man sitting up there, drinking beer and reading the NY Post with a magnifying glass. I hope one day to get him to pose for me.

terlet

This was the first finished piece I made after returning from my self-imposed exile from the land of drawing in early 2007. Since then I've used that balding guy in a bunch of other drawings.

And big props to fiveyearoldps who posted my Joe the Plumber comic on digg.com. Thanks!! If you're a member of digg, you can vote for it here

A quick comic that I did this week. I'd had the idea lying around for a while, but I figured I'd glom onto the title while the glomming's good. Of course, he looks nothing like the real Joe the Plumber, but by now that guy's an archetype, so factual accuracy doesn't matter.

And look what I got at Abracadabra on my way home today. Bleah!!

He's filled with that weird goo with the beads in it that feels like tapioca pudding. I love that stuff.

big butt party 3rd

A quick drawing from Sunday night; methinks it fitting to honor the passing of Rudy Ray Moore. As he so eloquently stated at the beginning of PETEY WHEATSTRAW: "My, my, my, what an ass. If a fire broke out in here and they told everybody to haul ass, you'd have to make ten trips!"

Nothing soothes a sunburn like hobo jizz, redux

hobo jizz color 2 again

So, after saying I wouldn't because I didn't have the time for such experiments, I went back and colored this drawing. The tan lines turned out to be easy to do, thanks to the wonders of drafting tape, which leaves behind no sticky residue and doesn't tear the paper once lifted. What's frustrating is that scanning these watercolor pieces really diminishes the quality; so much gets lost in the scan. It's worse now that I'm using a laptop, because the laptop screen is really hard to judge values by, even with b&w work. The thing is, I don't want to spend money on replacing my broken desktop computer when the laptop, which I get through my job, is really more than adequate for everything else.
Oh, I'm sure these little problems of mine are ever so interesting to read about, no??

A drawing from last year that I still haven't gotten around to finishing. I have to do some more with the background and put something on the box the kid is holding. But here it is for now.
