End-of-the-month sketch dump

Monday, June 30th, 2008

Arrrghhh, frustration! Too many demands placed upon my time by work and social obligations, leaving me not enough time in which to draw. Thing is, even if technically there is time in which to draw, I don't have those uninterrupted stretches of time I need to get into and stay in a good groove; into that place where you can really get immersed in what you're doing; where, even if you're not working per se, you're thinking about it, you're moving in that space in your mind. Too many distractions and interruptions, and then there's my own laziness and lack of focus. Oh well, here's some selections from my sketchbook.

I was pet-sitting a rabbit when I drew this. Unfortunately, I had to draw the nude buxom girl from my imagination.

Headless whores, man!
granculo
"Ho avuto un gran culo" is a saying in Italian that translates as "I was fortunate; I lucked out." The literal translation, however, is "I had a big ass."

fredo1
Fredo, the little orphan kitty rescued a couple of weeks ago by my best bud weeblondhooker continues to thrive and grow cuter by the day. Thing is, she really needs to find a good home for him, so if you live in the New York metro area and would like to become the lucky human of this insanely cute little kitten, please let me know. I mean, look at him! Just look at him!

Your heart will explode with the cuteness, I tell ya! He even gives Mr. Tutti

Go greased lightning!

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

A couple of people had positive responses to the original sketch for this drawing when I posted it a couple of weeks ago, so I decided to do it up. I may get rid of the cherries on the side of the car, as they're a bit corny. I may also lose the pattern on her panties and perhaps the tattoo on the head of his cock. We shall see; but, here it is for now...

A tedious account of my recent experiments with color

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

I bought some colored inks recently and was playing around with them over the weekend. I'd dabbled a bit with watercolor/colored inks before, but was never very satisfied because I couldn't get beyond a certain shade of darkness with them; I missed the strong blacks of regular old India ink. I thought I'd try again, however, with a stronger foundation of black ink and brush- and linework.
First, I tried hatching with them on top of some black-and-white sketches, but I didn't care much for the way it turned out...
cinksketches
I did a wash over the little flayed face on the left, and this seemed more promising. So, I did a couple of quick ink sketches with a substantial line and a good amount of shading and laid a wash over them to see how that would work...
cinkfigures
I'm pretty happy with it, as a start. I think I'll keep at it, see what I can do. I drew this one last night, just for practice...
cinkdiva
One thing that's frustrating is that the India ink runs a bit when the color is applied over it (sumi ink, which I prefer, is even worse in this regard). Plus I need some watercolor paper.
OK, end of boring shop-talk post. In other news, I posted a new drawing (actually an old one) in jensartnight on this week's theme of Tranny Hookers. And RIP George Carlin. Seems like everyone is checking out lately.

At the request of weeblondehooker…

I'm posting this comic from centuries ago when I was signing my work with my real name. The original art for this is stuffed away somewhere in my apartment (if I still have it), so this is a scan made from the last copy of the little self-published zine in which it appeared.

And what the hell, here's one more from that zine...

From the reject pile

Thursday, June 19th, 2008

A drawing from around 2002. I'd started inking it, but then gave up on it because I didn't like how it was turning out. I'm ok with the characters around the border, but I was really disappointed with how the main subject came out.

'tis heavenly, no? but those dirty soles! Ach! You've got to keep some Wet Ones handy just for ocassions such as this. (I know, I'm very picky)

Prior Offenses & Kitty Nonsenses

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

There's nothing special about this drawing from 1997, but it is very apropos because today makes 18 months since I quit smoking. Hoo-fuckin'-ray for me!

But the real hero of the day is weeblondhooker, who just rescued this poor little orphan kitty
fredo
His name is Fredo, and he's about 6 weeks old. She's nursing the little guy back to health and is going to try to find a good home for him. And this after she's already taken in this guy
tutti
Mr. Tutti! Arguably the coolest cat in the universe. He's an older cat who was abandoned by his previous owners. His teeth were in really bad condition when she found him, but after getting about half of them yanked he's in great shape and is happy and healthy and a total nut. I'm convinced he's a Buddha in disguise. He's definitely one of my favorite cats ever.
Love ya, weeblondhooker!

Summer Reading

Fuck the man!
riot

Also highly recommended is Johnny Ryan's The Klassic Komix Klub, which I picked up yesterday at his signing in Brooklyn. I've been caught in a shit-storm of laughs ever since!
And speaking of storms, my friend and I were caught in an apocalyptic rainstorm in Times Square today and who should we see coming down the block but Captain Picard himself, Patrick Stewart! As he passed we heard him shout out to his companion "Stay close to the buildings!", in that inimitable voice. Classic!
