Haven't done an Ambien Drawing in some time; I think I may be developing a tolerance to it--I don't seem to get as stoned lately. Last night I was feeling it though, and I decided to try a quick watercolor...

This drawing is a bit washed out and weak looking, but I wanted to post it because I really fell in love with the model, and not just because she's hawt. This was done at The Salmagundi Club in NYC, which has open sketch sessions twice a week. There's a piano in the room where the sessions are held, and during one of the breaks the model sat down at it and played a beautiful rendition of Satie's "Gnossiennes Nr. 1". It was a rare moment of beauty in my otherwise bleak existence.



I was gonna start talking to her, but the minute she finished, this old dude jumped in and totally cock-blocked me.

More trials combining watercolor with ink...
As a drawing, it's nothing to speak of; just wanted to have something to experiment on. My values are getting darker, though, which is good; I didn't have to adjust the contrast in Photoshop much at all...



I'm happier with these two. The outlines were done with burnt sienna ink and pencil.

A quick drawing with reed pen and watercolor; just trying to get a feel for how the two go together.



I'm not too pleased with the way it turned out. I think the stronger parts are where the line breaks and varies in weight, such as along her upper leg and breast; the heavier line of consistent weight seems to flatten the watercolor too much.
Here's my analysis of good lines v. bad lines...

Went down to Washington, DC this weekend to visit a friend. As luck would have it, my trip coincided with Glenn Beck's Restoring Honor rally on the National Mall. I was excited to go gawk at all the rednecks with their misspelled signs replete with Nazi and/or racist imagery, but it was a real bust in that regard. There were tons of rednecks, but the rally organizers must have learned by now that those signs with Obama with a Hitler moustache or dressed up like an African witch doctor are not exactly helping their cause when they show up on the news. I did get to hear the Great Man himself speak though, and I did get this nifty water bottle.



I listened to this song a lot on the train ride home. Funny stuff! (It doesn't really get started until the 0:40 mark)

I had to draw it twice. Unfortunately, I didn't do it justice either time. This model was so damn sexy-cute...

He looks a bit like Bobby Duvall. (Yes, we're friends, so I can call him "Bobby.")

I was going to color this, but decided against it.



It's drawn from a photo in a book....on witchcraft!!!

Before trying to do a watercolor drawing, I'll usually sit down and do a few practice runs. Since I'm mostly concerned with rendering flesh in all its lovely shades and perumutations, this practice usually consists of just pencilling some large butts and buttlike shapes and filling them in with watercolor. Last weekend, I did a few of these practice butts on postcards. And here they are...

These next two were drawn with a reed pen according to the rules of AD and then colored in the next day. It was a good chance to see how watercolor would work with heavy black.
